Set Up:

  • Line tables with newspaper
  • Each student will receive pre-drawn landscape of their choice – either a mountain scene, underwater scene, house, winter scene, or a blank piece of paper so the student can create their own scene
  • Each table will receive the following to share:  Paintbrushes, Paper Plates with Tempera Paint, Assorted Objects to use in Creating Texture
  • Provide students with a paint shirt if requested

Class Time:

  • Begin your lesson with a discussion about texture (refer to Texture discussion).
  • To demonstrate natural and artificial physical texture bring some items from home to show to the class.
  • To demonstrate visual texture, show samples of real paintings demonstrating texture from art book or other sources provided in your folder or on art wall.
  • Discuss project and give a simple demonstration on how to create texture with some of the various items (forks, q-tips, cotton balls, etc.)
  • Request that the kids use the tools rather than just their paint brushes.
  • Have the kids pick up their pre-drawn landscape before finding a place to sit at the tables.  If creating texture using a fork or comb – have them paint the space first, so that there is a base of paint to drag the fork through.
  • Encourage students to fill in all the spaces so that the entire paper is filled with color and texture.
  • Upon completion, mount students’ paintings using colored construction paper of their choice.
  • Please make sure that students’ names are on paintings.
  • Clean Up
